World Diabetes Day
Diabetes is one of the fastest growing health challenges, affecting around 800 million people globally, with India having highest cases.
World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on November 14 to raise awareness about diabetes and its impact
November 14 was chosen to honour Sir Frederick Banting’s birthday, the co-founder of insulin in 1922 (the other founder was Charles Best)
This year Theme was – “ Diabetes across life stages”
According to 2023 ICMR-INDIAB study, there are an estimated 101 million people in India with Diabetes in 2021.
This year the World Health Organization (WHO) has released its first global guidelines for Management of Diabetes during Pregnancy.
Diabetes affect one in six pregnancies or 21 million women annually which affects both mother & child . It increases life threatening conditions like pre-eclampsia, still birth and birth injuries.
The guidelines mention specific medication regimes for Type 1, Type 2 & gestational diabetes when pharmacotherapy is required and multi-disciplinary care for women with pre-existing diabetes.
The guidelines have given emphasis on proper diet, physical activity, blood sugar targets, regular check-ups and ensuring equitable access to essential medicines and technologies.
