The story of Calorie began from Parisian laboratory in 1780’s by French Chemist Antoine Lavoisier.

The word Calorie is of Latin origin.

Calorie’s journey began with our diet by Justus Von Liebig in 1840’s , who was concerned about Malnourishment.

Both science and fashion made calorie a household name, which was once used only by scientists and engineers.

With Lulu Hunt Peters’ book ‘Diet & Health’ change the ordinary act of eating forever as people started counting calories they consume

However certain thing we need to know about calories-

  1. Not all calories created are equal – 200 calories of almonds are processed differently from 200 calories of frizzy drinks.
  2. Energy absorption in our body depends on the unique genes, gut bacteria (both of these varies from body to body) and lastly the way in which food is cooked.

So next time you look into a calorie level do remember the history of origin of calorie.
